Keep the light within us

Susan MacFarlane (21), an adherent member at Calderhead Erskine Parish Church, opened up about her spiritual journey this month in the Kirk’s Life Stories Sharing Faith campaign.

Each month the remarkable stories of people who have encountered God will be posted online in the hope other followers of Christ will share their experiences too.

Susan, who is enjoying a gap year in Arbroath as part of the Church of Scotland’s Volunteering Vocations programme, said: “It was easy to participate in the Sharing Faith campaign, in the sense of getting involved with it. But on the other hand, it was quite difficult to open up and tell others of my personal journey and encounters with God.

“If we share our faith with others, we have a chance of getting them to think further about their own faith and beliefs and how they can strengthen it.

“We need the support of others to help encourage our faith and keep the light lit within us, otherwise it could burn out.”

Many benefits to becoming a Christian

Susan, who encountered God for the first time two years ago during a trip to South Africa with the Girls Brigade, said her family and friends had noticed “an increase in self-confidence and enthusiasm for the work I do” since that special moment.

She added: “I have noticed many benefits to becoming a Christian. I am able to see the joy in every aspect of life.I find it easier to talk to other people, to make new friends, I used to be very shy around others. I think it’s amazing how when two people have something in common such as a shared faith, there is an automatic connection there”
