Robert Coulter was born and raised in East Renfrewshire where he attended Williamwood Junior High School and Eastwood Senior High School. He studied Accountancy and Economics at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1977.
He subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant with one of the major accountancy firms, Price Waterhouse, a predecessor of PricewaterhouseCoopers, before embarking on a career in financial services.
He spent the majority of his career at Murray Johnstone, the global equity investment manager, which was headquartered in Glasgow. He had a number of responsibilities in finance and investment management, where he principally specialised in UK equity research and the management of pension funds, unit trusts and investment trusts. He subsequently moved into corporate development, which included the launch of the UK's first ever venture capital trust. He was appointed a Director of Murray Johnstone Investment Management Limited and was a member of the Association of Investment Trust Companies taxation committee, contributing to industry development.
He has been actively involved in Williamwood Church of Scotland, where he was formerly President of the Youth Fellowship and of Eastwood District Youth Fellowships. He was ordained as an Elder at Williamwood Church in 1985 and in addition to being a Member of the Kirk Session he also serves as Finance Convener on the Congregational Board.
Robert was appointed as an Employer Nominated Trustee in by the General Assembly in 2008 and was re-appointed for a further six-year term in 2014. He is a member of the Investment Group.
He is a long time supporter, season ticket holder and member of Queen's Park Football Club, and enjoys the occasional game of golf, watching live music and attending the theatre. As a former marathon competitor, he still enjoys a regular shorter run in order to maintain the fitness levels necessary to enable him to run around after two young grandchildren.
