Advent Day 5: The Shoes Brothers present: Come To Save Our Planet

The Shoes Brothers have returned this Advent with a new festive hit - ‘Come To Save Our Planet'. Rev Neil Urquhart of Fullarton ConneXions and Father Willie Boyd of St Mary's and St John Ogilvie's, aka the Shoes Brothers, have this time turned ecumenical eco-warriors with a little help from local organisations in Irvine, North Ayrshire.

The musical twosome have enrolled the help of the Irvine Clean-up Crew, Coastwatch, Irvine Beat and local school pupils to join them in their new video to accompany the song, where they rap and sing about looking after the environment around us.

Marking the release of the song, Rev Neil Urquhart explained why they chose to highlight environmental issues in this year's tune.

"Rising tides, floods, programmes like Blue Planet, and the protestations of our young people heighten awareness of the need to better care for Mother Earth," Neil said.

"We want to remind folk that Jesus is passionate about green issues - come to save our planet as well as us humans.

"Indeed, his first bed was a recycled animal feeder (manger)."

Father Willie Boyd, who may cause you to double-take whilst showing off an impressive set of dancing in this year's video, added:

"We love getting into the neighbourhood to celebrate community and catch people doing good.

"Once again people were so supportive and game for a laugh.

"Filming involved a few firsts, like singing in a wind turbine, dancing in a car knackers' yard and break-dancing, though I almost needed a ‘hip-hoperation' after it!"

The song premiered on Friday 29 November on Irvine Beat FM's lunchtime show, where the Shoes Brothers were also interviewed.

New heaven, new earth

From this Friday 6 December, local radio station Irvine Beat FM will be playing the song ‘Come To Save Our Planet' four times daily on their shows.
