Advent Day 7: The Nativity comes to life in Hamilton

Characters from the Nativity will be bringing some Christmas cheer to events around Hamilton this Advent starting with today's Reindeer Parade in the town centre.

Drama Kirk actors, who use theatre to help people to engage with the Bible, will then perform an original take on the Christmas story as seen from the perspective of two stars.

Director Liz Blackman said: "The story begins when a beautiful new star appears in the night sky; however, as a brand-new star he has no idea what Christmas is, or why we still celebrate it today.

"Thankfully there is a wise old star in the sky who can fill him in, and the Nativity comes to life before them as they discover the story together."

"The only thing he seems to know about Christmas is that people get a selection box. There will be lots of laughs as he discovers what the story is really all about."

The cast includes four talented young people from Woodside Primary, one from Hamilton Grammar, and people from four local churches.

Professional actor Chris McLeish, who was previously cast as a disciple in Drama Kirk's Passion Play, will perform as the young star.

This is the second time the group have been part of the Reindeer Parade, having performed their production 'Christmas on Canvas' at the same event last year.

"It is lovely to be asked back. This opportunity to support a major community event in our town is much appreciated," said Ms Blackman.

"It's a lovely way to share the Christmas story with young families and add a little drama to the festive fun!"

The following week the team will be spreading their brand of Christmas cheer to other community venues, including a nursing home and Clyde Valley Farm Park.

Members of the public are welcome to watch Drama Kirk's performance of 'A New Star' by Sharon Kay Chatwell at the following events:

  • In Hamilton town centre at the bottom cross soon after the 12.30pm Reindeer Parade on Saturday 7 December
  • At Clyde Valley Farm Park at 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December in the Carfin Estate in Crossford, South Lanarkshire
