Glasgow church presents the story of Govan through painted glass exhibition

Govan & Linthouse Parish are excited to present ‘An Untold Story', a public exhibition telling the story of Govan through the eyes of its congregation, schools and wider community.

The exhibition is an exciting eight-day event in the Glasgow 2018 European Championships' cultural programme, Festival 2018, and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland.

Veronica Jane Lynch, an experienced stained-glass artist and silversmith, has worked with various groups within Govan, as well as the public, to design and create a series of bespoke painted glass installations reflecting the inspiring story of Govan & Linthouse Parish Church and the wider community.

"I am profoundly thankful to Govan & Linthouse Parish Church for this opportunity.

"I'm a Glasgow girl at heart and I am very excited as to the outcome of this project and cannot wait to share all that we have worked on as part of the public exhibition," Veronica said.

Veronica's work began with a public screen printing workshop highlighting the historic industries within Govan as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival in May, where participants created their own T-shirts or tote bags depicting weaving, mining and shipbuilding.

She also ran workshops for local Govan families who created clay works depicting the many faces of Govan, from familiar famous faces, such as Sir Alex Ferguson to other less well known Govanites.

Veronica similarly worked with a senior adult group hearing their stories and having them incorporate these on to glass panels, while trying glass painting for themselves.

The local schools of Pirie Park and Riverside Primary also participated by painting or drawing local attractions from Govan throughout the years.

A great opportunity to celebrate local history

"We have been delighted to have Veronica lead on An Untold Story; she is an exciting artist, with a wealth of experience, that has greatly benefitted and encouraged those she has worked with.

"This has been a great opportunity for everyone in the community to celebrate local history and what Govan means to them.

"The public exhibition, taking place during Festival 2018, offers an exciting use for an empty high street shop front and is great way to celebrate all who have been involved."

Govan and Linthouse Parish Church encourages every community, school, organisation and individual in Govan and Glasgow to visit ‘An Untold Story' during its run.

The exhibition is open for public viewing between 11am-3pm on 2-3 August and 6-11 August at the former Govan Royal Bank of Scotland, 788 Govan Road, Glasgow, G51 2YL.
