General Assembly Youth Reps
Do you have thoughts on the Church of Scotland and its work? Would you like to share those thoughts at our annual General Assembly in Edinburgh? This is your chance!
Each presbytery is inviting one young adult aged 18-25 to serve as a presbytery youth rep at the General Assembly 2020. Through the youth reps programme they will have the chance to engage in debates, learn more about the Church’s work, meet other young adults in the Church and have their voices heard.
Who can participate?
Anyone aged 18-25 who is regularly involved in the life and worship of the Church of Scotland can put forward a nomination to their presbytery and be considered for the role. Reps do not have to be church members but must be involved in a congregation within the bounds of the presbytery they are to represent at the GA. Students living away from home can either represent their home presbytery or the presbytery where they are a student - whichever they feel they have stronger ties with. If every presbytery were to send a youth rep 46 young adults would be taking part. For more information, read the role description.
What will we be doing?
Along with the 10 National Youth Assembly reps you will be engaging in the worship, festivities and passionate debates that shape the General Assembly. You’ll stay with the other youth reps and attend preparatory sessions to ensure everyone knows what’s going on and how they can contribute to debates at the GA. Afterwards, you’ll have an opportunity to report back to your presbytery, sharing everything you’ve learned over the course of the week about the Church, its work and what can be expected in the year ahead.
Where and when does the GA take place?
The GA takes place in Edinburgh from 4pm on Friday 15 May until 4:30pm on Friday 22 May 2020. The GA is held at the Assembly Hall on the Mound, and youth reps stay at the nearby Holiday Inn Express, Cowgate.
We realise these dates fall during university exam time, which may make things difficult for reps who are currently studying. If necessary, a youth rep is allowed to attend for only part of the week. We just need to know at least two months in advance.
How do I take part?
Download and complete a nomination form and send it to your Presbytery Clerk by 1 February 2020.
Please note that, in order to give as many people as possible an opportunity to be a youth rep, we recommend that an individual only attends a maximum of four total and two consecutive General Assemblies on behalf of a presbytery. However, we would rather these places be filled than these recommendations strictly adhered to.
Does it cost anything?
No! Accommodation is provided and money spent on food and travel is reimbursed (up to £15 a day for food).
