John Flynn
John was born and brought up in Jarrow on Tyneside and at the age of nearly 23 [1978] he joined the Gas Board as an office worker in their Finance Department. In the year 2000 John moved to the West Midlands to work for Transco Plc in their Tax Department and that Company became part of National Grid Plc in 2002. Some 44 years after starting in the Energy Industry John ceased working for National Grid Plc in March of 2022 where he had spent the final 20 years as an Indirect Tax Manger specialising in VAT. John moved to Scotland in 2015 and lives in Leven within the Kingdom of Fife.
John became a Pension Trustee in September 2011 on a large DB Scheme and has worked on a number of reorganisations of the scheme since then including moving the funds from an inhouse investment company to an external market leading investment house, sectionalisation of the scheme, recruiting a paid executive team to take the scheme forward, a bulk transfer out of the scheme, three buy ins and transferring the pensions administration from in house to an out of house administration company. John also sits on the Employers Committee of the Scottish Housing Association Pension Scheme [SHAPS] and is an accredited pensions trustee in terms of his qualifications for carrying out his work.
Outside of the pensions world, John is the Chairperson of the Management Board of ORE Valley Housing Association in Cardenden, Fife; sits as a member of the Local Taxation Chamber within the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland and is the finance manager for a charity providing week long holidays to young people on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne just over the border in Northumberland. Although never good at individual sports, John does support Sunderland Association Football Club.
